Coimbatore: Two farmers from Mettupalayam submitted a petition to the District Collector on Monday urging action to stop vendors from accessing Ulavar Sandhai to sell their produce.
While addressing the press, farmers, Krishnamoorthy and Palanisamy said, "Ulavar Santhai in Mettupalayam was inaugurated around 19 years back to help farmers sell their produce directly to the consumers. Around 15 farmers have been selling their produce at MTP Ulavar Sandhai. However, recently the market is dominated by non-farming vendors who have political backup."
"The 'so-called' vendors who try to dominate the Ulavar Sandhai are pretending to be farmers indulge in threatening farmers and claim to have political backing. Despite, repeated complaints to concerned authorities, no action has been initiated", they alleged.
Farmers, Krishnamoorthy and Palanisamy also warned of a hunger strike, if the issue is left unattended. They also pointed that all their previous petitions have fallen in deaf ears.
The petitioners requested the District Collector not to issue identity cards for two members of the same family and protect the rights and welfare of the farmers at Ulavar Sandhai in MTP.
